We are grounded by the principles that public safety services should be lawful, legitimate, effective, and efficient. With a team largely composed of former law enforcement leaders, legal scholars, and police researchers, we build programming informed by adult learning principles and a growing body of good practice.

Research & Technical Assistance

Our current research agenda centers on incorporating evidence-based policing practices into agencies throughout the state of South Carolina. Our empirical work focuses on strategies that reduce violent crime while maximizing agency resources and minimizing police-citizen contact.

LEARN MORE ABOUT RESEARCH

“The solid work that has been done by the team at the Excellence in Policing and Public Safety Program has been nothing short of outstanding since the program’s launch in 2023. The growth across training, education, research, and partnerships reflects both the quality of the effort and its practical impact.

It has been encouraging to see how EPPS has built upon the foundation that already exists across South Carolina while also bringing people and organizations together in new and productive ways. Their partnerships with academic institutions, national organizations, and international partners are expanding opportunities for our law enforcement leaders to learn, connect, and contribute; both within the state and in broader professional conversations.

The momentum heading into 2026 is well earned, and the planned expansion reflects a program that is growing thoughtfully, with purpose and accountability.  A program that is uniquely advancing the police profession.”
